My first memories of
Christmas involed a
Christmas Tree. The Ornaments, the tinsel,
the SMELL. The Christmas
Gifts wrapped and
gleeming under the Tree. Some thing can't be improved
upon - don't even try...

1. In 16th century
Germany, people would hang apples, colorful candies, colored
paper, and roses
from tree branches. Martin Luther, inspired by the beauty of
stars shining through the branches of a fir tree, is credited with
being the first person to
add lighted
candles to a tree.
2. Some believe that
King George, a native of Germany, brought the tradition of
decorating a
Christmas tree to England. Others credit Queen Victoria with
bringing the tradition
to England
from Germany where her husband, Prince Albert, was
raised.
3. Christmas trees
have been sold commercially in the United States since about
1850. Before then - Chop one down yourself.
4. The most popular
trees are Scotch Pine, Douglas Fir, Fraser Fir, Balsam Fir, and
White Pine. I think
it's the smell.

5. Remember the HEAVY
Tinsel used on Christmas
Trees, the kind you
could roll into a little ball? It was banned by the
government because it contained lead at one time, now most
decorative Tinsel is made of plastic.

Christmas trees are produced each year and 95 percent are
shipped or sold
directly from Christmas tree farms. California, Oregon,
Michigan, Washington, Wisconsin, Pennsylvania, and North
Carolina are the top
Christmas tree producing states.
7. In 1984, the
National Christmas Tree was lit on December 13th with
temperatures in the 70s, making it one of the warmest tree lightings in
history.
8. Teddy Roosevelt
banned the Christmas tree from the White House for
environmental reasons.
9. Thomas Edison's
assistants came up with the idea of electric lights
for Christmas
trees
.
10. The tallest
living Christmas tree is believed to be the 122-foot,
91-year-old Douglas fir in the town of Woodinville,
Washington.
11. In 1923,
President Calvin Coolidge started the National Christmas Tree
Lighting Ceremony
now held every year on the White House lawn.
12. In 1979, the National
Christmas Tree was not lighted except for
the top ornament. This was done in honor of the American hostages in
Iran.
13. In the first
week, a tree in your home will consume as much as a quart of
water per day.
14. You should never
burn your Christmas tree in the fireplace. Like most pine like
trees it can contribute
to creosote
buildup and become a flue fire hazard.
15. Christmas trees
are used along the Gulf Coast to catch the wind and blown sand
at area beaches to re-build Hurricane ravaged
dunes.
